In the Gulf of America alone, within the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone, there is an estimated 21,444 Trillion cubic feet of methane hydrates in place. This is enough energy to secure domestic needs for centuries, provided we can extract it safely and economically.
The current offshore oil and gas industry relies on a massive, centralized point-of-failure model. Building a single deepwater drillship requires a capital expenditure between 500 million and over 1 billion dollars. Just to keep that rig operational costs between 146 million and 219 million dollars every year. Furthermore, these fixed platforms are geographically stranded and highly vulnerable to hurricanes, risking billions in asset damage.
